How are you all doing on your backups? I didn't get any of it done this weekend as it was crazy busy. Realistically I don't know if I will finish before my trip, but I will try to get a few more important folders done.

I used all the time reading and shopping for a backup provider on-line and did nothing.

I just used Carbonite to recover most of my files after a hard drive crash. (I'm one of the reasons Carol started this thread!) My big complaint (and it's partially my own fault) is that Carbonite was not backing up my entire hard drive. I've changed my settings, so now everything should be backed up. I'm planning to check on it in a week just to be sure.
Carbonite's techincal support was OK--long time on hold no matter when I called. 3 of the 4 reps with whom I spoke with were very nice and helpful. One was absolutely horrible--nasty, nasty attitude. But now that I had such a bad scare, I'm planning to use Carbonite, an external hard drive and DVDs that I will send to a friend. I'm beyond paranoid these days!! |

All of my kits are located on two computers (laptop and desktop) and EVERYTHING is now backed up on three EHDs. One of them is in my office and two are at home (these will be going in a safe when we get it after the first of the year). All of my photos are backed up on three different web services (Snapfish, Creative Memories, and RitzPix). All of my digital albums are backed up on Creative Memories Digital.
I had an EHD crash on me about a year ago, but fortunately, I was able to recover everything. This is why I now have three EHDs, and they are all 2TB. Who knew we would ever be using this much data. My first computer only had 8GB for a hard drive . |

I saw two services that I am interested:
One is TrendMicro $29 a year for unlimited storage CrashPlan - has awesome features. Now got to decide! |

I am so proud of all you guys. I just wished I had done this 2 weeks ago. You can bet when I get things started again, I will back up probably more than I need to.

new person here - but even with externals - they can crash, be stolen, lost in a house diasaster. We spend so much time on our digital supplies and layouts, which can be replaced. But to me, you will never be able to replace my children's pictures or those of my parents who have passed away.
With that said, I back up (Mozy, $5/month). I feel more comfortable with that and it runs twice a day so I know I'm always caught up. If I do a bunch of downloading or moving things around, I just back it up again when I done with the task. Happy Scrapping - Barb |

I am now fully backed up with my most important items burned to cds....that being said it was after a spiral of events. My husband called me from his work a couple of days before Thanksgiving asking me if I had all of our mp3s on my Zune. To which I said no not everything...a big chunk but not everything...especially not any of my x-mas music or most of the music only he likes. He says oh ok. Hangs up. When he gets home that night he tells me that he thinks our EHD is broken, but he thinks he can get the stuff off it at work the next day. Well the next day at work he trys everything he knows to get the data off the drive...recovery program, freezing it, dropping it (yes it works sometimes), and he wasn't able to recover anything off it.
Luckily it was our back up drive and I still had all of my pictures, scrapbook pages, and digital scrapbook kit files. We did lose all of our mp3s...except the ones I had on my Zune...we had a lot of mp3s. He had been re-organizing them off of the EHD while on the train to and from work over several weeks, and had pulled them all off of our computers. Now a lot of the music we can re-rip from cds ( a lot of work), but I had quite the collection of Christmas music from the days when you could get them free on napster...some were rare that I may never get again. I am so bummed since I love Christmas music. I listen to it non-stop from the day after thanksgiving until the day after christmas. Now I have been resigned to listening to the Sounds of the Seasons music channel on my Cable tv or on the ...gasp...radio in my car. I can only take so much Robert Goulet before I crack. So needless to say it prompted my husband to finally burn our stuff to cds and keep a copy at his work (though I had been asking him to do it for months). I am sad about my Christmas music being gone, but am very thankful that that was all we lost. So here is another public service message.... BACK UP YOUR FILES....we may now get back to Robert Goulet.
