What do you do with the big files created by PSE layouts?

I have been lurking on these boards for some years and finally got our Disney trip last August and have been using PSE11 to create pages that will eventually go into a photo book.

My question is that as advised by Jessica Sprague I save my layouts in PSD format (WIP) and then a web version and a printable version (smaller files) my problem is that my original PSD versions are huge and taking up so much room on my computer. Does everyone have this same issue or is there a way to reduce the size of the file that I don't know about.

WIP (work in progress) to me simply means stuff that you are working on what happens when you finish the page?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, my PSD files are large, too. I save them on an external hard drive instead of locally on my laptop which helps conserve space. I'm not sure if there is a way to reduce the size of the entire file, but I'd think that merging some layers might help (e.g. if you have a full sheet of paper clipped to a smaller element, I would think that merging the two layers would trim off all the extraneous material/data).

I have some of the layers merged/clipped to others especially when using templates.

I might experiment and see what difference it makes.
