More Organization - needed - Advice?

Well ...I am starting to out grow my previous way of organizing my kits. I previously had folders set-up for each designer. Inside their folder, I listed each kit and put a preview of the kit in that same folder. For example, I have a Britt-ish Designs folder. Inside that folder is a Just Plain Fun folder, Fish Are Friends folder, Made In America folder..etc....

The problem is that I have gotten too many kits and have to click on each folder to see the preview to remember what each kit contains.

I was thinking about putting together a master preview folder for each designer. So... inside Britt-ish Designs folder, I would have a folder called previews. In that folder, I would put a preview of all the kits I own by Britt.

At a quicker glance I could see all the kits and determine which one I wanted to use. Then, I could just go to that specific folder. Does that make any sense? Is this something you do? Effective? Do you have a better idea?

I did this with my Cindy Schneider templates. It is a huge help to just scroll through the previews and then determine which one would work best.

Any ideas and thoughts would be appreciated.

I have the same problem Melinda
Sometimes kits get lost and i end up forgetting about them.
I find that this happens very often with MS prizes. I probably have lots that i never used.

The only thing i did that helps a lot with templates is making folders according to number of photos. So when i buy a template pack from a designer i slip them to fit each in the acoording folder.

I separate all my kits out into specific categories - For example:
Paper
Frames
Brads
Buttons
Ribbon
Clipart
etc.

I find that this helps. When I am looking for paper, I go to the paper folder, etc

The only problem I have is figuring out who the designer is after I use a particular element. I need a better way of identifying/labeling stuff once I separte the kits out.

But, for the most part, this system works pretty well for me.

Melinda I have the same problem
and even with the "Preview" not "all elements are showing" like the front preview reads!

I will say previewing kits in Picassa is the best to see everything I have but I am seriously thinking in dividing my Disney Kits into Parks

AK, MK, HS and Epcot then the rest of the themes separate.
Mine collection is out of control!

I am also trying to do this that Denise wrote about Kits:

Unless you are on, or plan on being on, creative teams, I'm not sure designer would be the best way to organize.

I organize by theme - Here is an example of my Disney folder structure and how I name things:

_Disney
...templates (where I put all of my disney specific templates with mickeys, etc.)
...elements (where I put all of the great things I get here for prizes, like mickey blings, fab 5 stuff, etc. ..things that are not full kits)
...word art (titles, stickers, etc)
(all of the stuff in the previous folders are things that are not parts of full kits)
...Kits
.....>>>General Disney
.....*****My Magical Place, Haynay Designs
.....*****The Magic is Here, Mye De Leon
.....>>>Magic Kingdom (princessy type stuff, castle stuff, frontierland stuff)
.....*****Kiss that Frog, Britt ish designs
.....>>>Adventure
.....*****I Dream of Africa, keystone Scraps
.....*****Safari kit by Kelly
.....>>>>Epcot
.....*****Around the World, Britt ish Designs & Sahlin Studio
.....*****City of Tomorrow, Kellybell Designs
.....>>>>Studios/Transportation
.....***** Hooray for Hollywood Britt ish Designs
.....*****Are we There yet, Kellybell Designs

I started doing a preview folder for each designer, but found that I really wasn't using the designer strutructre really effectively because for the most part it doesn't really matter what designer I use so once I buy the kit I'm really not remembering who did what in order to search for it, kwim?

If you do organize by designer, I think the preview folder would be a good way to go. But if you have things by say, 20 designers, that is still too many folders to look through for a kit that matches a page you want to do.

Andrea, do you have a screen shot of it?

Melinda, I also have my kits in folders by designer and then sub-folders of the kits...Like you, I have so many kits, I can't remember what is in each one of them...I wish there was a way that you could put the preview as the folder, this way you could get a peek as to what is in the kit...

One way to do this is to view all your folders by thumbnails. Then in each folder have a folder with the elements in your kit BUT keep the preview of the kit out of the inside folder. That way, each folder view will only be your preview. Is this clear as mud?

So it would be
(folder)My Magical Place - Hayany designs
...........(folder)My magical Place papers and elements
............PREVIEW

by placing the kit elements inside a folder with the preview outside, you just see the preview inside your folder, and it is usually large enough to get a good idea of the kit.

This is a great idea! I might have to start re-organizing!
