Tutorial Suggestions!?!
 

Hey there everyone!

I was thinking of writing up some tutorials on different scrapping techniques.

Is there something specific that you all would like to see? Let me know what interests you, what you have a hard time with or what you would like to know more about!

and you know darn well that you DO NOT need a tutorial to be an awesome scrapper because you already are!!!

SHADOWS!!! It's the one area where I really feel I'm lacking and don't have the hang of yet.

- how to do a text path (in a shape or a wave)

- how to recolor an object. I can never get the color I want with the recolor tool in PSE... I have to use the paint bucket which loses all the variations in color/shadows

- how to use an overlay

Yes, PLEASE!!! And a lot of the custom shadows tutorials I've seen are things that can only be done in PS, not PSE... I'd love to learn how to work more with PSE's shadowing capabilities. I'd also really like to build a 'cheat sheet' of which numbers to use for what kinds of items... I know I've seen a couple lists like that online but I wasn't really thrilled with the results I got. :confused:

ooh i have a good one for using shadows in PSE!! i will start working on these tonight!

I'm not even sure what I want to know is called...

Say I am making a mickey with 3 circles and get them all the size I want and grouped. Now I want that exact same Mickey grouping somewhere else on my page? How do I "copy" the group?

Which program do you use? Heh... maybe anyone who digi scraps should put their software in their signature :rolleyes:

Maybe the tutorials could have the software as part of the title for the post (ex. Shadows: PSE6).

guessing that you are using some version of photoshop:
just highlight the 3 layers you want to copy. on my mac i just hold down the apple key and click each layer in the layers palette, on a PC i think it would be the control key? then just right click one of the highlighted layers, hit copy (not sure what the shortcut key is) , and it will copy all the highlighted layers!

from there, just keep those layers you want to be moved together highlighted, move them where you wish and resize them as you wish!

that is actually a great idea!! i use PSE 8 and i used to use PSE 6, so if someone else wants to do some tutorials for any other program, that would be awesome!

Would it be okay if people posted links to great tutorials they have used? Why "rewrite the book" if you already know of a tutorial on that topic?

Would it also help to put the tutorials into threads by software - i.e. PS, PSE, etc. ? Maybe that would only be needed if we got a lot of tutorials.

I'm pretty sure I am the odd one out here that uses GIMP, but with monies being tied I have found this free software fabulous so far and have started dabbling in blogging the odd tut for GIMP. Here's a tut on shadowing using the Perspective Tool in GIMP --> In Perspective using GIMP

I use PSP (Paint Shop Pro) if there's an interest in tuts for that I'd be more then willing to help out.

I would love a tutorial on text paths that work in PSE. I also would like to know how to journal in tight spaces around elements on the page! :)

awesome suggestions everyone!! i have started working on some basic tutorials for people just getting started with scrapping and then i will get working on some for more advanced stuff!

I love learning new techniques, sometimes I have to practice over and over until it finally makes sense. Here are some random thoughts about tutorials, some might have been mentioned already:

- shadows, need good explantion about size, distance, direction, color. Would be great to see lots of examples of different settings on the same element.
- how to create curves, curved papers
- how best to cluster elements
- how to align/size alpha letters quickly for your title (for me, one letter will always look kinda misaligned)
- using photo masks
- how to make text wrap around a square or circle
- good explanation of using 3600x3600 or 2400x 2400 papers, 300vs72 dpi, full size vs tagger, what does all this mean when you print a page
- how to make a blinkie
- how to set up/customize a blog

Oh just forget all the above, please just come over to my house and spend a few days scrapping with me and I'll be so much smarter!!! he-he

This is a great idea !!! We definitely need a thread like that ... and putting what program we use in our signatures is a great idea too !! Going to add mine in. I am mostly a Paint Shop Pro user on a PC ... Tanya you're on a Mac ... so some of the shortcuts and functions may be different. But will be easy to modify from Mac to PC.

The only reason I used Paint Shop Pro is for the plug-in's ... especially shadowlab. :thumbsup: I couldn't live without it.



I also noticed last night .... if anyone has an ipod ... and they log onto itunes, and type scrapbooking into the search bar ... there are digital (and paper) scrapbooking podcasts.

I added a field called 'Software' to the profile page. If you add what software you use, it will show up under your avatar.

Goofys Girl and I had the same idea for this.

I also added Camera and Operating System to the profile fields, though they won't show up under the avatar at the moment. I can change the code to show one/both of them if there is enough interest.

Using alphas that are in one file?
 

Hi,

I've purchased a few kits that have the alphas as 1 file instead of all the letters being a seperate file. How do I use those letters when they are in 1 file? I use SBC for my layouts (and am pretty new to this & looking for all the help I can get).

Well... I use SBC and can tell you how I do it... but I am completely self taught... so there might be a better way... lol..

I just add the full alpha to my page and then use the rectange cutting tool to carve/cut out the letters I want. I know several of the ladies prefer the alphas all on one sheet as it doesn't eat up as much space.

How about a tutorial on how to make a signature? I still haven't figured that out....:confused:

For a signature I start with a canvas of 3600x1800. create my "layout" and include my name. I crop the image to eliminate extra unused space. Then I merge and resize to about 500 width and save for web. If I do not use a background, I save as a png to get the transparency, otherwise save as a jpg.

Upload your sig to an image hosting site like photobucket and add it to your sig under User CP on the forums you visit.

Just be sure the height is 200px or less, please :)

"clipping" for SBC users
 

With so many people using Photoshop, I always feel like a little like Cinderella (the step daughter that isn't as loved ;) )

I see a lot of masks and other items that are made to "clip" to photos to create a certain look. Maybe antiqued, folded edged, or clear photo protector and I can't seem to be able to use them.

The protectors I bought were in .tif and/or .psd files and I couldn't really utilitize them since they were designed to be clipped to the photo and just laying it on top of the photo didn't make it look like it was in a pocket.

Now, I see a cute set of clipping masks in .png, but I don't know if it will work for me. Here is the description: "Use these clipping masks to easily transform your papers and photos instantly with slightly worn edges."
Does anyone have any suggestions for us lowly SBC users. Thanks
